Being his birthday its the perfect time to cover one of the best records of all time especially considering the circumstances. But Donuts too me is the perfect project. Its set up perfectly It has the perfect track titles and Jay Dee just communicates with us through instrumentals.

Sometimes in life you just cant win for losing. James Yancey worked as hard as any beat producer in the rap game. He made his childhood friends from Detroit into a household name as Slum Village created sonic masterpieces as part of collectives like Ummah.
It was the first J Dilla beat tape to be given an official commercial release but will certainly not be the last. One of the many things that will be missed about Dilla in the years to come is his wry sense of humor evident from the very beginning of this album as the first track is Donuts Outro and the last track of the album is Donuts Intro. J Dilla is never one to disappoint and that is especially true on his magnum opus Donuts.
Many things have been said about this album that I dont care to rephrase. All I will say is that I hope J Dillas. Donuts is one of my favorite albums and Jordan Ferguson gives an informed critical interpretation of the work as a whole by placing it in the late style and draws fascinating parallels between various samples and J Dillas state of mind during the last year of his life through his deteriorating health.
Like everything else Dilla has ever done Donuts is not defining. In fact elements of its approach bare the apparent influence of Jaylib collaborator Madlib. His mode has always been too slippery and restlessly progressive to be equated with any one track or album but Donuts just might be the one release that best reflects his personality.
J Dilla produced the track for Ghost before he died but I guess he still wanted an instrumental version on his own album. Overall Donuts is a hell of an album. Donuts J Dillas last completed album before he past away is a great album to have in your repertoire.
Unlike my previous reviews I wont go over in detail every track this album offers since theres 31 tracks to cover. Instead Ill give a one sentence review for most tracks but my personal favorites will get two to three sentences. J Dilla proves why he was one of the greatest producers on this project.
With amazing samples beat flips and energy Donuts is a work of art. You just know from hearing this that Dilla put so much heart and work into the project and its so sad to see him gone at such a young age. May he Rest In Peace.
